Use this resource to prepare for your next healthcare opportunity. Adapt the recommendations to your profession, specialty and employer requirements.
What employers need to find quickly
Start with your name, credentials, professional contact details, current clinical role, specialties, board certification where applicable, and relevant licenses. Make your qualifications easy to verify.
Use a clear, reverse-chronological structure
Include education and training, clinical employment, certifications and licensure, procedures or practice areas, leadership, teaching, research and publications when relevant. Give month and year for major training and employment entries, and explain significant gaps accurately.
Show the scope of your clinical experience
Describe patient populations, care settings, responsibilities, relevant procedures and leadership contributions. Use truthful specifics rather than generic phrases such as 'excellent team player.' Never disclose patient-identifying information.
Tailor your CV to the opportunity
A physician CV may emphasize residency, fellowship, board status, publications and clinical scope. NP and CRNA CVs may emphasize population focus, clinical competencies, practice settings, certifications and relevant experience. Match the position's requirements without overstating qualifications.
Make it readable and easy to share
Use clear headings, consistent dates and simple formatting. Proofread carefully, keep a PDF version, and use a descriptive filename. Avoid unnecessary graphics or complex columns that make information difficult to extract.
Before you send it
Confirm your contact information, licenses, certifications and dates are correct. Check whether the employer requests a CV, resume, cover letter or additional credentialing documents. Do not include sensitive identifiers such as Social Security numbers.
Should a physician CV be one page?
Not necessarily. A clinical CV can be longer than a traditional one-page resume when it includes relevant training, experience, publications, teaching and credentials. Prioritize accuracy, relevance and readability over an arbitrary page limit.
